Spiders

Maybe it's just all the hubbub surrounding the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (as if you need a link!) but my own life is now suffused in symbolism. Yesterday, I saw spiders everywhere. I saw one eensy-weensy white one in my car, of all places, dangling from the rearview mirror. I saw one teeny-tiny brown one dangling from the ceiling in my bathroom (it almost landed in my hair to join who knows what-all in there). Then, I found one not-so-teensy spider in the large square serving dish that sits on my counter. Not dangling, but just hanging out near the artfully and fragrantly arranged really, really ripe bananas.

Now, if I were a character in a Harry Potter book, these spider sightings would have great significance. To my lingering regret, I am not. So, I decided to look up spider symbolism in world culture. Here's a taste of what I found:

If spider has come into your life, ask yourself some important questions. Are you not weaving your dreams and imaginings into reality? Are you not using your creative opportunities? Are you feeling closed in or stuck as if in a web? Do you need to pay attention to your balance and where you are walking in life? Are others out of balance around you? Do you need to write? Are you inspired to write or draw and not following through? Remember that spider is the keeper of knowledge of the primordial alphabet. Spider can teach how to use the written language with power and creativity so that your words weave a web around those who would read them.

The answer to these questions is a resounding, "Yes." Does blog writing count?
